How to: Install a CD-ROM in Windows 95 Protected-mode.
Solution:
Check that the 'plug-and-play' CD-ROM drive was properly installed. If Windows 95 was an upgrade, verify that it worked under Windows 3.x.
1) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
2) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
3) Double-click the 'Add New Hardware' icon. (The 'Add New Hardware' Wizard dialog box appears.)
4) Click 'Next'.

5) Select the 'No' radio button and click 'Next'.

6) Select 'Hard disk controllers' from the 'Hardware types' list box and click 'Next'. (The 'Manufacturers and Models' menu appears.)
7) Select 'Standard hard disk drivers' in the 'Manufacturers' list box.
8) Select either 'Standard hard disk drivers' or 'Dual PCI IDE hard disk drivers' (depends on type IDE controller user has) in the 'Models' list box.
9) Click 'Next'.
NOTE: Windows 95 will interrogate the 'plug-and-play' device and the appropriate driver will be enabled.
10) Click 'Next' and click 'Finish'.
11) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
12) Select 'Shut Down...'. (The 'Shut Down Windows' dialog box appears.)
13) Select the 'Restart the computer' radio button and click 'Yes'.

14) Verify that the correct protected-mode driver is installed by doing the following:
a) Click the 'Start' button to display the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Settings' and select 'Control Panel'. (The 'Control Panel' window appears.)
c) Double-click the 'System' icon. (The 'System Properties' dialog box appears.)
d) Click the 'Device Manager' tab. ('Device Manager' should display a CD-ROM icon.)
e) Double-click 'CDROM'. (The CD-ROM drive manufacturer and model should display.)
NOTE: There should not be any MS-DOS drivers displayed under Device Manager.
